Ray Jay is the stadium with the pirate ship. The 103 foot ship in the north end zone fires its cannons when the Buccaneers score, and on concert nights it becomes part of the scenery for the biggest tours that come through Tampa.

Know before you go

Stadium nights

Raymond James Stadium opened on September 20, 1998. It seats about 69,000, with room for about 75,000 when temporary seats go in. Hillsborough County owns it and the Tampa Sports Authority runs it.

Kenny Chesney has played here more than anyone, at least seven times since 1999. Taylor Swift filled it three nights running on her Eras Tour, the first act in stadium history to do that. U2, Beyonce, One Direction, the Rolling Stones, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran have all played it, and Super Bowl halftime shows here have featured Bruce Springsteen and The Weeknd.

Before Ray Jay

The stadium replaced Tampa Stadium, the Big Sombrero, which opened in 1967. That was where Led Zeppelin drew about 57,000 in 1973, breaking the Beatles' record for a single concert. Tampa's appetite for very big shows is older than the building.

Parking and rideshare

The stadium sits on North Dale Mabry Highway, with George M. Steinbrenner Field across the road. Lots around the stadium open well before showtime, and for the biggest concerts parking is sold ahead and can sell out entirely, so buy it early. Rideshare and taxis stage at Steinbrenner Field, and a pedestrian bridge takes you across Dale Mabry, which beats dodging highway traffic on foot.

Surge pricing after the show is common, so some people walk a few blocks before calling a car, or wait out the first rush. Dale Mabry and the I-275 ramps are slow in both directions for a while after a stadium show.

Weather in the stands

This is an open stadium, so a summer show means hot seats until the sun drops and a decent chance of an afternoon storm. Lightning in the area means a delay, sometimes a long one. Bring sunscreen and a rain shell, drink water, and check your ticket for the night's bag rules.

Country tours love this field, so watch the country calendar. Arena shows play Benchmark International Arena downtown, and every area date is on the Tampa page.
