Scott Carswell, a Tallahassee native and concert promoter, put $2,500 down on a closed A&P grocery store on Lafayette Street in May 1984. He turned it into The Moon, which opened in April 1985, and he has run it ever since.

No theme, on purpose
Carswell never pinned the club to one sound or one crowd. The room has hosted dinner theater, fashion shows and election night watch parties, and by its 40th anniversary it had put on more than 750 full concerts. It holds about 1,500 standing and can seat about 900.
Who has played The Moon
The list covers just about every lane.
- Hip hop from OutKast, The Sugarhill Gang, 2 Live Crew and Method Man
- Alternative rock from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Pixies and The Replacements
- Country from Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kenny Chesney and The Judds
- Rock and pop from Pat Benatar, Meat Loaf and Hall and Oates
Funk has a special tie here. Carswell produced records for George Clinton and joined his management team in 1995, and Clinton moved to Tallahassee partly because of Carswell and The Moon. In 2013 Carswell also took on the ticketed shows at the Capital City Amphitheater in Cascades Park.
Parking and arrival
The Moon sits at 1105 East Lafayette Street, east of downtown. There is a lot beside the building and overflow parking across the street, and big nights have used lots along Apalachee Parkway with crosswalk attendants on hand. The club has gone cashless, so bring a card for drinks.
Quick tips
- Age limits change by show, so check your ticket.
- Earplugs help near the front on loud nights.
- On FSU home football weekends traffic gets heavy across town, so leave early.
