The Broward Center for the Performing Arts has two main theaters under one roof. The Au-Rene seats more than 2,600 and takes the big touring musicals. The Amaturo is the other one, with 584 seats, built for drama, children's theater, film, jazz, folk and chamber music, and for concerts that would get lost in the larger hall.

Know before you go
On the New River
The center opened on February 26, 1991, with the first national tour of The Phantom of the Opera in the main hall. Broward County owns the building and the Performing Arts Center Authority runs it. It sits on the north bank of the New River in Sailboat Bend, at the west end of downtown, and it anchors the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District. The Riverwalk itself runs east from the center along the river, a block south of Las Olas Boulevard for much of the way.
The same team also runs The Parker in Holiday Park and the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center down in Miami-Dade.
The smaller room
In a hall this size the stage is close from every seat, which suits a jazz trio or a songwriter with one guitar. The Amaturo also carries a lot of the center's children's theater and community shows, so a weekend matinee crowd can skew young. Read the listing to know which kind of afternoon you are walking into.
Parking and the walk
The A&E District Garage is directly across the street at 101 SW 5th Avenue, and valet is offered for most performances. If the garage fills, other downtown garages work, including the Riverwalk Center Garage on SE 2nd Street. The Brightline station on NW 2nd Avenue is within walking distance too, a fair stroll through downtown.
Tips
Get there early and walk the river before curtain, since the Riverwalk at dusk is a good part of the night. Curtain time is printed on your ticket. For more nights like this one, try jazz and blues or classical around Florida, and the Fort Lauderdale calendar for the rest of Broward.
