Julian "Cannonball" Adderley was born in Tampa in 1928, grew up in Tallahassee, where his parents taught at Florida A&M, and graduated from FAMU in 1948 before he and his brother Nat headed north. Jaco Pastorius, who changed what the electric bass could do, grew up in Oakland Park, just north of Fort Lauderdale.
Festival weekends
Jazz and blues festivals here lean outdoors and toward the water. Each Memorial Day weekend, downtown Jacksonville hands its streets to the city's jazz festival, with much of it free. The Clearwater Jazz Holiday sets up in Coachman Park on the downtown waterfront each October, and the Tampa Bay Blues Festival brings three days of blues to Vinoy Park in St. Pete each spring, with the bay a few steps from the crowd.
The rest of the year
Between festivals, jazz lives in supper clubs, small listening rooms and the performing arts centers, and the blues lives in beach bars and inland roadhouses. The calendar fills out in winter, when seasonal residents are back and the evenings are cool enough to sit outside without a towel on the chair.
The funk crowd will find more under R&B and soul.
