The room
The Culture Room is a dark, plain rock club in a shopping plaza on North Federal Highway, the stretch of US 1 that runs north out of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Nobody comes for the architecture. The black walls keep the attention on the stage, the sound is loud, and the crowd stands. It is general admission and standing room only, with no assigned seats anywhere.
There is also an open patio for smokers, first come, first served. It has no view of the stage, but a live video feed of the show plays out there, so stepping out for air does not mean missing the encore.
A long run on US 1
The club has been booking bands for more than two decades. By the mid 2000s a married couple had been running it for nearly ten years, and New Times Broward-Palm Beach named it the area's best rock club in 2002 and again in 2006. That 2006 write up praised a calendar that ran from death metal to bluegrass, with national headliners next to local bands. Miami New Times gave it the same title in 2017, pointing to acts like Against Me!, Bleachers, Frank Turner and Matt & Kim.
That mix is the appeal. Punk, metal, indie, jam and roots tours that are too big for a bar and too small for a theater tend to land here.
Before you go
The venue asks guests to leave personal belongings in the car, so travel light and keep your pockets simple. A plaza lot on a big night fills up, so a rideshare saves you a lap around the block. Age limits and door times vary by show, so read your ticket.
