James L. Knight Center

400 SE 2nd Ave, Miami · 11 upcoming shows

The Metromover has a station named for this place, which tells you how long it has been part of downtown. The Knight Center Complex opened on October 2, 1982, together with the Hyatt Regency on the north bank of the Miami River, a short walk from Bayfront Park. It carries the name of newspaper publisher James L. Knight. It opened as the James L. Knight Convention Center, became the James L. Knight International Center in 1986, and settled on the shorter name later.

Know before you go

A theater inside a convention center

The City of Miami owns the complex, which pairs meeting halls, a riverwalk and the hotel with a theater of a little over 4,500 seats. That theater is what people mean when they say they have tickets at the Knight Center. It holds several times the crowd of a club and a fraction of an arena, so concerts here feel closer than they would at the big building up Biscayne Boulevard.

From Miss Universe to Lo Nuestro

The theater hosted Miss Universe in 1984 and 1985 and Miss USA in 1986. R.E.M. played two concerts here, and Wheel of Fortune taped shows in the building. Premios Lo Nuestro, the Latin music awards, called it home through the 1990s before moving on in 2000, a fit for a city where so many fans grew up on music sung in Spanish. See more Latin shows.

Getting there

Knight Center station on the Metromover drops you at the complex, and Metrorail connects to the Metromover at Government Center. Drivers park in the garages around downtown, and prices move with the event. If you are early, walk the riverwalk behind the building and watch the boats head out toward the bay.

Good to know

Brickell sits just across the river, so dinner before the show is a short walk over the bridge. Door times and bag rules are on your ticket. When a tour is too big for this room, it usually lands up Biscayne at Kaseya Center, and the Miami listings have every other date in the county.
