The Amp sits in an old coquina quarry on Anastasia Island. Colonial builders cut that same shell stone for the Castillo de San Marcos across the water, and remnants of the quarries are still visible around the grounds.

Know before you go
Built for a birthday
St. Augustine turned 400 in 1965, and the city marked it with two monuments, the Great Cross at Mission Nombre de Dios and this amphitheatre. It opened on June 27, 1965, on land in Anastasia State Park, built for Cross and Sword, a symphonic outdoor drama by Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Green about the city's founding. The Florida Legislature named it the official state play in 1973, and it ran for more than 30 years.
By the late 1990s the site needed about $3 million in repairs, and in 1999 the Cross and Sword board asked St. Johns County to take it over. A long fundraising and construction effort followed, and the rebuilt amphitheatre reopened in August 2007 with a tensile canopy over the main stage.
The bowl
The venue lists just under 5,000 seats. St. Johns County holds the site under a long lease from the state, and SJC Cultural Events, a nonprofit, has operated it since 2023. Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt and John Legend have all played here. Expect a deep rock and roots calendar with plenty of country and indie in between.
Weather and bugs
Shows go on rain or shine unless lightning or high winds force a pause. Umbrellas are not allowed, so pack a poncho for summer nights when the afternoon storm runs late. Bring bug spray for the park next door.
Bridges, lots and the trolley
From the mainland, the Bridge of Lions and the SR 312 bridge both lead to Anastasia Island, and both back up on busy beach weekends. Follow A1A South to the venue.
On site parking is very limited and sells out ahead of time. The better plan is the free satellite lots at Anastasia State Park and the R.B. Hunt Elementary School field, both within a mile, with a free trolley shuttle that starts an hour before gates. Skip the nearby neighborhoods, since deputies patrol them and cars get ticketed and towed.
For a much smaller room on the same island, try Cafe Eleven in St. Augustine Beach, or browse all of Jacksonville and St. Augustine.
