The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater

1700 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach · 20 upcoming shows

Jackie Gleason moved his variety show to Miami Beach in 1964 and taped it in this building until 1970. The city had opened the hall in the late 1950s as the Miami Beach Municipal Auditorium, right beside the exhibition hall that grew into the Miami Beach Convention Center. After Gleason died in 1987, it took his name as the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts.

Know before you go

How it became the Fillmore

Live Nation took over operations in 2006, refurbished the hall and reopened it in 2007 as the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater. Ricky Martin christened the renovated room with three nights on his Black and White Tour. The Gleason name stayed on, which is why you will see both names on tickets, maps and old posters.

The City of Miami Beach owns the building, and city leaders have debated more than once whether to restore it or replace it as plans for the convention center district changed.

The room

The hall seats about 3,230, a size that sits between the clubs and the arenas. That middle ground has drawn Madonna, Janet Jackson, The Weeknd, Lana Del Rey and Sting, and earlier bills brought Tony Bennett, Liza Minnelli and Seal. Ricky Martin's opening stand fit a city where so much of the crowd grew up on Latin pop sung in Spanish.

Parking in South Beach

The Fillmore does not run its own parking. The city garage at 17th Street and Convention Center Drive is a block away and is the usual choice, and valet is offered for shows. Street parking around Washington Avenue is scarce on a weekend night, and crossing the causeways from the mainland can eat more time than you planned, so leave early.

Good to know

The theater is at 1700 Washington Avenue in the middle of South Beach, so dinner and a drink before the show are an easy walk. Your ticket will have the door time and the bag rules. Across the bay, Kaseya Center takes the arena tours, pop has more dates around the state, and the Miami calendar covers the rest.
