The Vanguard

578 North Orange Avenue, Orlando · 10 upcoming shows

Before it was a concert hall, the building at Orange Avenue and Concord Street sold tires. Firestone opened its Orlando station there on March 1, 1930, built to greet motorists in style. The outside you see on North Orange is still that original station.

From tires to turntables

The city named the Firestone building a historic landmark in 1983, and the tire business left in 1991. Nightlife moved in. For years the building ran as the club Firestone, then Firestone Live, and in October 2014 it became Venue 578, named for its street number.

Venue 578 closed at the end of 2017. The owners kept the historic exterior, gutted the inside and rebuilt it as a concert hall, planned on roughly the scale of a House of Blues. The Vanguard name made its debut with a two night outdoor dance event on the property's Lot 54 over Halloween weekend in 2020, produced by the festival promoter Insomniac.

What plays here

Dance music is a big part of the identity, and DJ bills are a regular part of the calendar alongside touring bands. Many of those nights run late. Check your ticket for doors, set times and age limits, since they vary a lot from one booking to the next.

North end of downtown

The Vanguard sits at 578 North Orange Avenue on the north side of downtown, a short walk from the SunRail stop at LYNX Central Station on Garland Avenue. Regular trains are done long before a late set ends, so plan a rideshare or a designated driver for the trip home.

City garages and private lots are scattered around this end of downtown, so read the posted rates before you pull in. On weekend nights, Orange Avenue traffic crawls between here and the bar strip to the south, so give yourself extra time.

Electronic shows around the state are on the electronic calendar, and every Central Florida date is on the Orlando page.
